A full week ahead of opening in the US, it’s no surprise that The Avengers has dominated internationally, raking in $178.4 million in its overseas debut. The movie placed first in all of its markets and set new opening weekend records in a dozen of them as well.
Similar to The Avengers’ foreign achievements, Think Like a Man continued to dominate the domestic box office, despite newcomers The Pirates: Band of Misfits, The Five Year Engagement, and Safe. The Steve Harvey tell-all book-turned-film pulled in an additional $18 million this weekend. This brings the film to a $60.8 Million cumulative.
Columbia Pictures’ animation The Pirates! Band of Misfits managed to steal the second spot in its debut weekend at $11.4 million.
Universal’s romantic comedy The Five Year Engagement, starring Jason Segel and Emily Blunt, placed 5th. The film received a 63% from the Rotten Tomatoes “Tomatometer.”
Lionsgate’s Safe, starring Jason Statham, ultimately proved too formulaic to set itself apart from the action thriller pack– including some of its star’s better films. For those who saw the film, 80% liked it according to Rotten Tomatoes audience choice. The film holds the 6th spot in its opening weekend, making $7.7 million in 2,266 theaters.
