A viral video has exposed a North Carolina woman after she called a group of Black women the n-word just after bragging about having Black friends.
The footage was posted to Facebook by Chanda Stewart, who explained she was dining with friends at Bonefish Grill in Raleigh, North Carolina, Tuesday.
“So this happened today,” Stewart began. “What was supposed to be dinner with my girlfriends ended up in us being called stupid n—ers. The climate of the country today has some people thinking whatever they feel….they can say. The reality is if we were to retaliate with this same kind of hate and ignorance we would be called ‘angry black women’.
“As I prepare my child for the real world these are some of the people I prepare her for. The hateful, prejudiced, racists who think we should all ‘go back to where we came from,’” she continued. “Hopefully, this idiot is not your coworker, neighbor, or friend. If so….what will you do with this information??”
She concluded her post by writing a paraphrased quote from Martin Luther King Jr., which read, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”
In the video, a woman who may be Stewart zooms in on the restaurant patron in question.
“This person has the audacity to come at our table and tell us that we are the rudest people that she has ever met,” she says as the white woman looks up from where she’s standing at her own table and smiles at the camera.
Then the woman leaves her table and approaches the group of friends, Smiling, she raises her own phone and appears to start recording.
“I’ve got really good friends that are black and I love them,” she says.
“We ain’t never said anything about color,” the woman filming the footage says.
“You’re too loud,” the white woman says.
“In your opinion,” another member of the friend group replies.
“You’re so stupid, n—er,” the white woman hits back before storming off.
The ladies shout in astonishment wondering if she calls her Black friends the same slur.
“They’re not like you!” the white woman shouts back.
The interaction led Stewart to dub the woman Turn Down Tina, apparently for her penchant for asking the women to pipe down.
Those who saw the footage expressed outrage in the comments section.
“See, the moment that heifer said that to me, I would’ve been hauled off to jail!”
“Woah woah woah racial discrimination 😒 lawsuit 🧐 and I just know your voices are lovely don’t hold back for anyone….”
“Keep sharing so everyone no she is racist.”
When one commenter asked what Bonefish had to say in response, Stewart said, they just gave the customer a “slap on the wrist. Told her she could have handled it differently she left on her own. Had it been the other way around we would have been banned from Bonefish. The waiter apologized to us but also said we all could have been more mature about the situation. 🤔.”
Atlanta Black Star reached out to Bonefish Grill for comment. In a statement, the restaurant said, “We are a place for all people to gather for good food in a comfortable atmosphere, including positive interactions among guests. We do not tolerate hate speech or disrespect in our restaurants. We are reviewing the incident to see how we can do better at deescalating something like this in the future.”
