Lyft Driver Carjacked Near Morehouse In Rash of Robberies, Admin Vows to Keep Students Safe

A Lyft driver was dropping off a passenger near the Atlanta University Center when he was robbed by three men.

Imani Dawson told Channel 2 News the incident happened around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday along Cunningham Place. He told authorities that he’d just dropped off a passenger and stepped out of his car to smoke a cigarette. Three men then pulled up in a burgundy sedan and were armed with a handgun and crowbar. They robbed the Lyft driver of his wallet, cellphone and car keys before taking off with his vehicle.

“I really wanted to fight back but the dude had the gun so close to my face I didn’t want to get shot,” said Dawson.

This is the third robbery to take place in the AUC in a matter of days and the Atlanta Police Department believe the crimes may be connected.

“We did have a unit that was about two blocks away who was patrolling the area,” said Capt. Reginald Moorman of the ADP. “We are also working with Morehouse College police, Clark Atlanta University police and Spelman (College) police in providing presence in this area.”

On Tuesday, 19-year-old Deaven Rector was carjacked at gunpoint in his apartment complex parking deck and 20-year-old political science major Justin Clark was robbed after leaving the library. Both students attend Morehouse college.

“Morehouse College police will also increase patrols along the boundaries of the campus to keep watch over students returning to their residence halls at night,” stated Morehouse College spokeswoman Aileen Dodd. “We will remain vigilant during this investigation and keep in close contact with the APD until these suspects are apprehended.”

Both Rector’s and Clark’s vehicles have been recovered while Dawson awaits news on his 2018 Hyundai Elantra. All suspects remain at all large.
