President Donald Trump has leveled an apparent threat against California Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D) after the lawmaker spearheaded a campaign to make Cabinet members feel unwelcome in public spaces as a form of resistance.
“Congresswoman Maxine Waters, an extraordinarily low IQ person, has become, together with Nancy Pelosi, the Face of the Democrat Party,” Trump tweeted Monday. “She has just called for harm to supporters, of which there are many, of the Make America Great Again movement. Be careful what you wish for Max!”

The president’s comments come just days after Waters, 79, called on supporters to shame and harass Trump administration officials after a Virginia restaurant owner refused to serve White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and asked her to leave. On Tuesday, Homeland Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, who’s been the face of Trump’s zero-tolerance policy separating migrant children from their parents, was also heckled out of an upscale Mexican eatery, joining a list of others who’ve faced similar backlash.
“We are going to win this battle,” Waters told a crowd of cheering supporters over the weekend. ” … If you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station — you get out and create a crowd and you push back on them. And you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere.
The congresswoman’s remarks have drawn negative reactions from critics who argued she isn’t much better than Trump, who routinely called for violence against demonstrators who showed up to his campaign rallies.
