WBRC FOX6 News – Birmingham, AL
A Brooklyn homeless man was found dead at the local “Stop n Shop” after a scuffle with the store employees. The incident is currently being investigated by authorities.
According to the Daily News, officers arrived at the supermarket where 51-year-old Ralph Nimmons was unconscious on the floor. One of Nimmons’ friends Perry Nixon said that he would “go and pick a thing out of the store sometimes. But we all used to do that.”
Witnesses said three employees claimed to have seen Nimmons stealing a cake box and immediately wrestled him to the ground. A customer offered to pay for whatever he stole but the store employees refused to take the money. The employees then sat on him until the police arrived which suffocated him until he fell into unconsciousness.
First responders attempted to revive him and after failed attempts rushed him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Nimmons’ family called on the Brooklyn District Attorney to look into the possibility of charging those employees with manslaughter, according to reports.
Family members describe Nimmons as a “mild-mannered, good man who wouldn’t hurt a fly” and they said they feel confident in the District Attorney’s investigation.
“To know that they have already started investigating. I am very touched by that,” Eloise Siverls, the victim’s aunt, said. “I want justice for my nephew.”
