Trump administration appointee Carl Higbie has stepped down as Chief of external affairs for the Corporation for National and Community Service after a CNN KFile review revealed racist, sexist, homophobic and anti-Muslim remarks he made on the radio. Higbie also issued an apology via Twitter.
“I’m sorry. I’m not sorry that my words were published, I am sorry that I said them in 2013. Those words do not reflect who I am or what I stand for, I regret saying them. Last night I informed the WH that I was resigning so as not to distract from POTUS’ many success. #noexcuses”
CNCS spokeswoman Samantha Jo Warfield announced news of Higbie’s resignation on Thursday, Jan. 18, CNN reported.
The federal volunteer service organization, created in 1993, connects volunteers with service opportunities and oversees government initiatives such as AmeriCorps and the Social Innovation Fund. Higbie was appointed to the corporation in 2017 to manage its public image — but that’s all over now.
A CNN review of the ex-Trump surrogate’s past comments on the radio found a trove of shockingly disparaging remarks about African-Americans, Muslims, women, immigrants, the gay community, and even military service members suffering from PTSD.
During a December 2013 appearance on radio show “Sound of Freedom,” Higbie accused “the Black race” of having “lax morals,” saying Black women think “breeding is a form of government employment.” The KFile review also found a clip where Higbie said you could “guess the color” of a family living in his condo association.
“I told this story the other day on my show,” he said. “Somebody who lives in my condo association that has five kids — and it is her and her husband with the five kids and the mother, the grandmother of the kids, and they don’t have jobs. They’re there all the time … I bet you can guess what color they are — and they have no job.”
In another clip, Higbie, a former NAVY Seal, blatantly stated that he doesn’t like gay people or Muslims “because their ideology sucks,” according to KFile.
“Well people are like, ‘well, you can’t hate somebody just for being Muslim,'” he said. “It’s like, yeah, I can … most Muslims believe that to have sex with men is okay, which I don’t like it all. But second off, it is the ideology of a child molester. The ideology of a Muslim is what I don’t like. They are screwed up in the head and it [sic], pisses me off.”
These remarks are just two of several racist and incendiary comments the CNN review uncovered. During other radio appearances, Higbie called military members with PTSD “weak minded,” said he’d “volunteer” to shoot undocumented immigrants crossing the border and dubbed Sen. Dianne Feinstein a “bitch” whose head he would like to “smack together a couple of times” with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s.
In November 2016, Higbie also suggested that people who receive government assistance shouldn’t be allowed to vote.
