Update: A representative for R&B singer R. Kelly denies claims of holding at least six women in a “sex cult” telling TMZ, “Mr. Robert Kelly is both alarmed and disturbed by the recent revelations attributed to him. Mr. Kelly unequivocally denies such accusations and will work diligently and forcibly to pursue his accusers and clear his name.”
Original story: Singer R. Kelly is once again facing sexual misconduct claims amid a new report that says he has six women holed up in his Chicago and Atlanta homes.
Parents of an aspiring singer say they enlisted the help of police and the FBI to bring their daughter home, according to a Monday, July 17 BuzzFeed report, however, J. and Tim’s daughter didn’t seem to want to leave Kelly’s residence.
“It was as if she was brainwashed,” said J., one of three other parents — including her husband — wanting to bring their daughters home. “[She] looked like a prisoner — it was horrible. I hugged her and hugged her. But she just kept saying she’s in love and [Kelly] is the one who cares for her. I don’t know what to do. I hope that if I get her back, I can get her treatment for victims of cults. They can reprogram her. But I wish I could have stopped it from happening.”
The women’s lives are entirely controlled by Kelly, according to three ex-members of his inner circle. The R&B singer has power over their cellphone usage, what they wear, when they sleep and how they behave on taped sexual encounters with him.
“You have to ask for food,” Kelly’s former personal assistant Cheryl Mack said. “You have to ask to go use the bathroom. … [Kelly] is a master at mind control. … He is a puppet master.”
Mack along with Kitti Jones, and Asante McGee, told BuzzFeed Kelly refers to the women, the youngest of whom is 18 and met Kelly at 17, as his “babies” and commands them to refer to him as “Daddy.” The women’s phones are reportedly taken and replaced with new ones that he can only be used as Kelly sees fit. If anyone breaks the singer’s rules, a verbal and physical punishment allegedly ensues, as it did when Jones said Kelly held her against a tree and slapped her because she was too nice to a male cashier.
“R. Kelly is the sweetest person you will ever want to meet,” McGee, who said she never saw him hit anyone, said. “But Robert is the devil.”
When reached for comment on the story, Kelly’s Chicago-based laywer Linda Mensch told BuzzFeed, “We can only wonder why folks would persist in defaming a great artist who loves his fans, works 24/7, and takes care of all of the people in his life. He works hard to become the best person and artist he can be.”
She requested her client’s personal life be respected.
This is the newest set of sexual misconduct allegations Kelly has faced during his nearly 30-year career. His infamous 2008 child porn case included an anonymously sent tape to the Chicago Sun-Times on which Kelly allegedly had sex with a minor. He was found not guilty of 14 counts of child porn. Kelly also married the late singer Aaliyah by using a falsified marriage license, which listed the “Rock The Boat” singer as being 18 when she was actually 15.
Online, several tweeted their reactions to the latest allegations.
Some were upset.
