A Wisconsin Court Has Ruled It Legal to Kick Out a Tenant Because of Race

In this Atlanta Black Star video, a Wisconsin court ruled that a white homeowner has the legal right to kick a tenant out because he is Black.

In 2013, Martin Jones, a Black man, moved into home with white homeowner Michael Haller. Jones signed a contract to rent out one bedroom for $400 a month after Haller recently separated from his wife who also co-owned the home. After a heated argument between Haller and his wife, Haller informed Jones he had to move out because his wife did not want a Black man living in their home. Jones took Haller to court claiming violation of the Fair Housing Act but lost. While the courts agreed that race was a factor, it concluded that the homeowner had legal right to decide who lives in his home.
