Critics in Houston are outraged over a $1.2 million plan proposed by the Houston Independent School District to rename schools that are tied to the Confederacy.
According to KTRK ABC 13, HISD voted in May to rename seven schools. The district plans to vote in the coming days to move forward on the plan.
Parents who have spoken out against the renaming process believe the district should not be spending this exorbitant amount. They believe the cash-strapped district should invest in teachers, resources and educational facilities instead.
Alumni and parents have filed a lawsuit to stop the proposed plan.
Here are the seven schools with current and proposed name changes:
- Margaret Long Wisdom High School (currently Lee High School)
- Meyerland Performing and Visual Arts Middle School (currently Johnston Middle School)
- Heights High School (currently Reagan High School)
- Audrey H. Lawson Middle School (currently Dowling Middle School)
- Bob Lanier Middle School (currently Sidney Lanier Middle School)
- Northside High School (currently Davis High School)
- Yolanda Black Navarro Middle School (currently Jackson Middle School)
