After announcing plans a week ago to sell the weapon used to murder unarmed Florida teen Trayvon Martin, George Zimmerman‘s gun was sold in an online auction on May 18. The private sale was hosted by UnitedGunGroup.com. The website did not disclose the gun’s price.
Two separate auctions were hosted on the group’s website: one for pre-qualified buyers and another for the general public. United Gun Group said the public bid of $138,900 by “John Smith” was not authentic.
Zimmerman attempted to sell what he called “an American icon” on the website Gun Broker on Thursday, but the auction was removed.
At the time of his initial auction announcement on May 12, Zimmerman said proceeds will go toward fighting the Black Lives Matter movement.
