This is the photo shoot Black models everywhere have been hoping for. After much contention about diversity in the fashion industry, W Magazine released a photo spread featuring all Black models for its August 2015 issue.
Styled by W’s current fashion director and world-renowned stylist Edward Enninful, the models Ajak Deng, Amilna Estevao, Anais Mali, Aya Jones, Binx Walton and Tami Williams are seen in fall’s latest trends while rocking their natural coifs.
Shot in upstate New York by Emma Summerton, the spread is titled “Natural Selection.”
The models depict a variety of complexions and hair textures worn by people of melanin.
This is a long time coming, and while it deserves celebration, it should become the standard, not the exception.
Are Black designers next to be featured in a major fashion magazine? Fingers crossed.
