The Force to Be Reckoned With
The Kingdom of Kongo was made up of six different provinces. Bamba was the largest and richest. According to Clarke, the province of Bamba maintained a reputation of authority and militaristic sophistication all throughout the Congo. In fact, the leaders of the region were able to properly command a unit of up to 400,000 soldiers on any given field.
The All-Around Art Moguls
While the arts were held in high esteem all throughout the Kingdom of Kongo, the Bakuba people epitomized the idea of “high culture.” Known for their skillfulness and beautiful textiles, the Bakuba people created a new tradition of art. Clarke noted that the royal portrait-sculptures of the Bakuba people are often described as some of the greatest sculptures on the continent of Africa.
