Dynamic hip-hop duo Big Boi and Andre 3000, known as Outkast, were sued in 1999 by Rosa Parks after the release of their smash hit with her name. The mother of the Civil Rights Movement filed a lawsuit stating that the use of profanity and vulgarity in the song was disrespectful to her legacy and that her name was used without her consent.

The lawsuit was settled months before Parks’ death in 2005. Part of the settlement required Outkast to work with the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development in Detroit, helping youth to understand the impact of Rosa Parks’ legacy in American history.
