Hip-hop pioneers and supporters are pushing to open a museum in the Bronx.
At a news conference Wednesday, organizers said it will be called the Universal Hip Hop Museum.
Hip-hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa, who was honored Wednesday by the New York City council for his cultural contributions alongside legends Kurtis Blow and Grandmaster Melle Mel, says the museum will tell an in-depth story of the genre that extends far beyond the common misconception that it is solely about rap.
Hip hop is a movement with deep roots that many revere as didactic including Cornell University, which hired Bambaataa as a visiting scholar – the first faculty appointment of its kind at a major university.
New York City Council members Jumaane Williams and Fernando Cabrera are heading the advisory committee that is raising money for the project.
The committee hopes the museum will open inside the Kingsbridge Armory in 2017.
