Drake Goes Electronic With ‘Come Thru’ Remix by James Blake

Drake and electronic music producer/DJ James Blake were working in the studio earlier this year, but their work never made Drake’s “Nothing Was The Same” albumNow Blake has taken Drake’s R&B bonus track “Come Thru” from the album and given it an electronic makeover. According to stereogum.com:

“The Drake/Blake connection! James Blake opened for Drake’s star-studded OVO Fest back in August, and both artists offer up dreary, heartfelt takes on forward-looking pop, similar enough that someone thought to put together a full mashup album called James Drake in 2011. So it was only a matter of time before Blake took a crack at remixing one of Drake’s songs. The one he’s chosen is “Come Thru,” a Nothing Was The Same bonus track that just keeps growing on me. (Its sudden switch midway through — from vaguely passive-aggressive warmth toward an old flame to creepily possessive, overtly passive-aggression about who she’s been sleeping with — is illustrative of Drake’s mesmerizing asshole persona.) Blake’s take focuses on the track’s lighthearted first half, but it’s significantly darker thanks to a bounty of ominous synth lines that occasionally resolve into something funkier and friendlier.”

Drake is currently promoting the “Nothing Was The Same” album on his “Would You Like A Tour?” road show, and it will be interesting to see if he performs this new version of the song.
