New York Jets QB Competiton: Geno Smith Likely to Get Start

With the injury to veteran Mark Sanchez, the New York Jets quarterback job may be Geno Smith’s. According to a team insider, the organization has already decided that the rookie QB will likely start Week 1.

With Smith’s competition, Mark Sanchez, nursing a sore joint in his throwing shoulder, the rookie QB will be at the helm when the team faces the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 8, sources said Friday.

Coach Rex Ryan provided no update Friday on Sanchez’s condition, but he has been listed as day-to-day, and could reportedly miss a few weeks, sources said.

“Until there’s an announcement, the competition is ongoing,” Ryan said.

Although Smith may start the first game, Ryan added that the competition could stay open into the season.

“I guess it’s a possibility,” he said. “When we feel good about it, we’ll make that decision. Certainly we haven’t put a timetable on it as far as naming a starting quarterback. When we feel [good] about that decision as an organization, we’ll make it.”
