Love & Basketball: Kevin Durant Engaged to WNBA Player Monica Wright

Kevin Durant’s surprise engagement to Minnesota Lynx point guard is art imitating life. The Oklahoma City forward proposed to Monica Wright and she accepted.

Kent Youngblood of the Star Tribune Tribune confirmed the news on Twitter, “Post-game Monica Wright confirmed reports that she and Kevin Durant are engaged. So there’s that.”

Fans of of the 2000 romantic comedy “Love  & Basketball” will immediately see the similarities. Monica shares the same name as the lead character who joins the newly formed WNBA and marries her college sweetheart who joins the NBA as a star player.

According to Twincities.com, “Durant and Wright, both 24, became friends after they met at the McDonald’s High School All-American Game in 2006. Durant ‘was a college standout at the University of Texas, Wright at the University of Virginia.'”

Durant may have foreseen the friendship progressing into something more when he playfully tweeted on September 6th,

“Or maybe I need a basketball playing girlfriend…hmmm lol…monica wright where r u(love n basketball).”

The Oklahoma City Thunder star wasn’t the only one dropping hints of a growing romance. According to Yahoo.com,

“Wright had fueled speculation via social media in recent months, sharing on Instagram on a photo of her standing alongside Durant in an oversized Thunder hoodie and shorts, as well as a screencap of a FaceTime  chat session  during which she said Durant was “gettin [her] mind right.”

There is some disbelief surrounding the news with BlackSportsOnline editors urging fans to hold off on congratulating the couple.

If Kerry Washington can manage a secret wedding, Kevin Durant and Monica Wright can pull off an engagement without  an official announcement.

Congrats!
