It’s unclear whether the parts were made in Russia, the U.S., or Taiwan, but a Russian Proton-M rocket failed to maintain it’s trajectory into space, exploding moments after launching from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan today. No one was aboard the vessel but the payload of three satellites intended for Russia’s Glonass GPS system were destroyed in the explosion. Although nobody was injured, local news service Interfax is reporting that nearly 500 tons of fuel from the craft has spilled and contaminated the crash site. No statements on the cause of the disaster has been released, but the model is known for it’s equipment failures
