Eyewear to Challenge Google Glass Due From Huawei

Huawei has revealed that it is working on its own pair of Google Glass-style glasses, with the futuristic technology set to play host to augmented reality.

Fielding questions following the company’s “discover possible” MWC 2013 press conference, Huawei’s CEO of consumer products, Richard Yu, suggested that the company could launch the glasses in “five to ten years.”

“We are doing a lot of research and we are doing a lot of development in our labs,” Yu said.

Asked directly about the company launching a potential rival to Google Glass, he added: “I wish we could show you what we are working on for over the next five to ten years, including glasses.”

Although the company’s product head did not offer further details, he teasingly added: “We want to make it possible.”

Google has captured consumer imagination with the upcoming eyewear. It includes a camera that records point-of-view video content and will receive heads-up displays around location-based details, messages and alerts. Interest has grown in the emerging market.

Since the confirmation of Google Glass, a selection of manufacturers has teased their own advanced eyewear options with smartphone and wireless specialist Huawei targeting the wearable tech markets.
