The latest bit of Iron Man 3 promotional material showcases Guy Pearce’s character, who has been mostly out of the spotlight up til now. His poster features him dramatically removing his sunglasses, which may be dangerous, what with all those sparks flying about.
Pearce plays Aldrich Killian, a very minor character in the Extremis arc of the Iron Man comic, which the film’s story is partially based on. In the comic, Killian is a scientist who develops the eponymous Extremis, a nanotech serum, and then sells it to terrorists before killing himself out of guilt. His role has presumably been significantly beefed up here.
Marvel’s “Iron Man 3″ pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?
I’m going to guess that the man makes the suit. But we’ll know for sure when Iron Man 3 comes out on May 3rd.
