To be precise, Skyfall director Sam Mendes is “75 per cent of the way” towards reprising his role as a James Bond director for the next Bond installment. At least, that’s according to this article from Daily Mail. The only thing between Mendes and a commitment is the final script, which he has yet to see.
Originally, the plan was for writer John Logan to write Bonds 24 and 25 as a two-part story, and the movies would have been shot back-to-back. Which would have eaten up four years of Mendes life, which wasn’t kosher for him. But now that plan’s been scrapped, and 24 and 25 will be stand-alone. Which Mendes is cool with! Also, Skyfall‘s massive success probably means they’ll be handing him a significantly bigger paycheck to do another movie. That would be pretty tantalizing.
Mendes, whose work I’ve generally been chilly towards, really surprised me with how well he did on Skyfall. So I’d definitely be okay with him coming back to the series. Eon Productions is reportedly aiming to get Bond 24 in theaters sometime in 2014. Stay tuned.
