A slew of images from Before Midnight has just been released via Collider, revealing a smirking, mischievous and boyish Ethan Hawke alongside a skeptical, wooed, and disbelieving Julie Delpy.
Richard Linklater’s Before Midnight is the third part in a trilogy that has almost spanned two decades. It all began in 1995’s Before Sunrise, where Hawke and Delpy met at the wrong time aboard a train in Europe and instantly fell for one another. It continued nine years later in 2004’s Before Sunset, where the couple meet again in Paris. Now, in 2013 (September specifically), Hawke and Delpy meet once again in Greece.
Love stories of this magnitude often beg such questions as “Will they finally stay together?” or “How are they going to potentially ruin each others’ lives this time?” And that’s half the fun. The other half exists for couples who went out on their first date to see Before Sunrise. The same couples that seemed to “get it” so much that they were married by the time 2004’s Before Sunset came out and are chomping at the bit for this year’s update. The official synopsis reads as follows:
“We meet Jesse and Celine nine years on in Greece. Almost two decades have passed since their first meeting on that train bound for Vienna. Before the clock strikes midnight, we will again become part of their story.”
Before Midnight wrapped up shooting early in September and quickly found a buyer and distributor through the Toronto International Film Festival. It’s looked at as a welcome return from Richard Linklater, who’s latest efforts – Bernie and Me and Orson Welles – have lingered under the radar for too long to be considered good. His 2006 effort, A Scanner Darkly, is looked at as the last decent effort from the director (and Keanu Reeves, for that matter).
In any case, these latest images seem to promise everything fans of Before Sunset, Before Sunrise and Before Midnight can dream of. There seems to be flirtation, desire, resistance and, well, …awkward Owen Wilson-style hair. Enjoy the rest of the pictures below.
