Ishiro Honda’s famous giant monster, Godzilla, will be rewritten by Frank Darabont for a May 2014 release date. The previous drafted script was penned by Max Borenstein, but now Darabont has been approached to revamp the project. Working alongside director Gareth Edwards, Darabont is said to be aiming for a “grounded, realistic tone,” which looks to be an idea that makes great sense.
Casting rumors for Godzilla are still in its beginning stages, with a host of leading men. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was reportedly offered the role already, but refused the job in favor of Sin City 2. Henry Cavill, Scoot McNairy and Caleb Landry-Jones are now in talks to be the front-runners at this stage in casting. McNairy may have an advantage because he previously worked with Edwards on his breakthrough hit, Monsters.
Darabont is a Golden Globe and three time Academy Award nominate film director, screenwriter and producer. He has directed the Stephen King’s film based books, The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and The Mist. Darabont also developed, executive produced and directed the pilot episode of AMC’s The Walking Dead in 2010. As of 2012, he is currently working on his newest project L.A. Noir.
Filming of Godzilla will begin in Hawaii and Vancouver on March 14, with a planned release date of May 16, 2014.
