Jazz Saxophonist Jimmy Greene Mourns Daughter Lost in Newtown Shooting

A day after 20-year-old Adam Lanza allegedly opened fire on students and administrators at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., early reports from The New York Times and other news sources identified one victim as 6-year-old Ana Marquez-Greene, daughter of jazz saxophonist Jimmy Greene.

According to The Times, Jimmy Greene moved with his family to Newtown in July. After other jazz musicians posted their condolences on Jimmy Greene’s Facebook page, he responded: “As much as she’s needed here and missed by her mother, brother and me … Ana beat us all to paradise … I love you, sweetie girl.”

CBC News reports that the Greene family moved from Winnipeg, Canada, to Newtown, Conn. after Greene’s wife got a job at a local university. Jimmy Greene was reportedly a faculty member at the University of Manitoba’s school of music for three years before the family moved.

Ana Greene’s older brother was also in the same school with her, but is reportedly OK.
