Move over American Horror Story, the first official Bates Motel TV trailer teases murder, romance, and even incest. A&E’s new series Bates Motel, follows the life of young serial killer, Norman Bates, set in contemporary times. Bates Motel stars Vera Farmiga as Norman’s overprotective mother, Norma, whose post-mortem persona becomes a fixture in Norman’s mind as seen in Psycho. British newcomer Freddie Highmore plays the demented and schizophrenic young Norman.
Freddie Highmore and Vera Farmiga as Norman and Norma BatesThe idea alone for a series chronicling the life of a young serial killer is genius. For whatever reason the masses are obsessed with serial killers and what drives them. Combine that idea with one of the most iconic and terrifying characters in movie history, Norman Bates, made famous in 1960 by horror director Alfred Hitchcock and it’s a recipe for instant horror television success.
The trailer not only shows clips of the upcoming series, but also includes commentary from the actors. Hearing the reactions of Vera Farmiga, Freddie Highmore , and other actors adds to the hype. The actors are bubbling with excitement over the upcoming series, nearly bursting at the seams wanting to give away spoilers. Their delight alone makes me want to tune in. The snippets of the series itself is just as tense and exciting as the commentary alludes to.
The trailer opens with a sinister deep bass sound, similar to the American Horror Story theme song. The initial commentary reveals Norman’s “different” nature and the story picks up shortly after the Bates acquire their new motel.
If the series is anything like the trailer, it’s sure to pull in the ratings and a dedicated following.
