Unfortunately, it’s been about four years since we’ve seen Guillermo del Toro direct a film. In a recent interview with Huffington Post, the famed director opened up about his own excitement in returning to what he does best with Pacific Rim, due out in 2013.
Although he hasn’t been directing, Guillermo del Toro has certainly been keeping busy. He’s produced several projects, including this year’s Rise of the Guardians and next year’s anticipated thriller Mama. He’s even been attached to directing several projects by rumor alone, most notably The Hobbit.
“A lot of the attachments that are announced are not real,” he said. “A lot of them are – I’m not denying it. But a lot of them happen.”
Speculation has come to define Guillermo del Toro’s directing career over the past four years. The last project he directed was Hellboy II: The Golden Army, which was seen as a vast improvement over the original. The project before that, of course, was the unforgettable Pan’s Labyrinth in 2006.
“I don’t want to ever go another four more years without directing if I can help it. But it may happen,” del Toro admitted. “I like very much taking those movies serially – and putting a year of pre-production and design and put all the love that is needed.”
With Pacific Rim, something Guillermo del Toro claims is a “huge design,” the famed director has taken his time. Thefilmfollows Earth as its existence is threatened by an alien attack. Giant robots piloted by humans are deployed to fight off the foreign menace. Idris Elba is slated to star.
“…We were severely under budget,” del Toro said in regards to Pacific Rim. “We were able to allocate that budget into more of the effects. So it was very important for me to have that movie be a fiscal exercise on my craft as much as an artistic endeavor I wanted to prove to myself that you don’t get rusty – that you can go right back to the bike and ride it.”
Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim is slated to hit theaters next Summer. While that’s quite some time for most del Toro fans, we’re sure it’ll be well worth the wait. It’s always good to see an artist return to his medium and show ample amounts of excitement. With the amount of treatment del Toro is giving to Pacific Rim, nothing short of a visual masterpiece is expected. Whether or not the storyline or acting measures up remains to be seen, but del Toro’s showing of footage at Comic-Con was deemed “impressive” by those in attendance. A picture featuring Elba in full armor has also been released.
Guillermo del Toro has a few films he’s attached to in the her future, including Hellboy 3 and yet another Pinocchio adaptation. Whether or not these come to fruition remains to be seen. We’ll be sure to keep you updated. Or not. By del Toro’s own words, after all, a lot of them aren’t real. But a lot of them happen
