When Sam Raimi announced he’d be writing a remake of his own seminal horror classic The Evil Dead, I think the general reaction was “Why, God, why?!” Practically the definition of “cult classic,” Raimi’s feature debut re-defined low budget horror, pushed the boundaries of good taste, helped revamp the American independent film, and created a pop-cult icon in Bruce Campell‘s Ash.
And with so many remakes, re-imaginings, prequels and Hollywood’s general cannibalization of cinema history recently, I think we had a right to be worried.
Luckily for us, nobody does cannibalization like Sam Raimi.
Behold, the first trailer for the Raimi-scripted, Campbell-produced Evil Dead (no “The”). What at first seems to be your run-of-the-mill teenagers in the dark and spooky woods film quickly descending into an hysterical bloodbath. Packed with nightmare-inducing body mutilation, self-immolation, flesh-eating fun and chainsaw-y goodness, this footage more than earns its red band rating.
That last image will make you think twice before you lick the last of the peanut butter off the knife.
Bask in the bloody glory below.
