The official YouTube channel for Les Misérables has released a new trailer for the film, which will be running on television. The spot is essentially identical to the first teaser for the musical that was released back in May. The differences are pretty slight, with some rearranged editing and tiny slivers of previously-unseen footage.
That being said, the overall effect is still pretty brilliant, with Anne Hathaway’s haunting rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” scoring the proceedings. There’s an odd phenomenon of the song being used as an inspirational piece (see: everything with Susan Boyle). I suppose people have never paid close attention to the lyrics, and realized that it’s all about how life kills dreams. It’s really quite the downer. That this film seems to understand how tragic “I Dreamed a Dream” truly is seems like a great indicator that its treated its material right.
I’m extremely excited for Les Misérables. The Broadway show is fantastic, and the book it’s based on is even better. It’s one of our great stories, and this latest adaptation might just live up to it. Check out the spot for yourself below.
Les Misérables will be released in theaters nationwide on Christmas day.
