The start of their much-anticipated regular season opener is still 10 days away, but the war of words between the reigning Super Bowl champion New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys has already begun in earnest.
Giants linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka fired a salvo back at Jerry Jones, a few weeks after the Cowboys owner spoke at his team’s training camp of his burning desire to “beat the Giants’ asses.”
“He should, he should,” Kiwanuka saidon WFAN radio on Thursday morning. “The New York Giants have been whupping his ass for a long time. I mean, it has got to be tough on the outside looking in on all these championships lately.
“But that is the feeling I feel like everybody in the league has and what they should have,” Kiwanuka continued. “Because when you are on top, everybody should be wanting to knock you off.”
Dallas will get the first crack at the Super Bowl champions at MetLife Stadium next Wednesday evening when the Giants begin defense of their title against their arch rivals to christen the NFL season. The two NFC East rivals will meet again on Oct. 28 at Cowboys Stadium, where the Giants are 3-0 since the glitzy, $1.2 billion palace opened in 2009.
Kiwanuka was responding to Jones’ when he implored some 5,000 Dallas fans to come to Cowboys Stadium later in the season.
“Y’all should come to that (Cowboys) stadium and watch us beat the New York Giants’ asses,” Jones said at a team pep rally to signal the start of Cowboys camp back in late July.
New York swept Dallas last year en route to winning the NFC East and its second Super Bowl crown in four years.
The Giants gave scant attention to Jones’ comments at the time.
“Because talk is cheap,” defensive end Justin Tuck said, quoting Tom Coughlin’s time-honored mantra. “Play the game.”
