'Red Hook Summer' Executives Pleased With The Opening Weekend

Spike Lee’s Brooklyn project Red Hook Summer, which was shown in four locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn, averaged about $10,525 per theater. The film took a different route than other specialty movies, opening on four screens instead of the “safer route” of two locations.

“We’re very excited, and think this is a great start to the show,” Variance Films head Dylan Marchetti said. “As Spike often says, ‘no shenanigans’ – so rather than play the per-screen average game and open only two theaters, we made sure the film was available to its audience in Harlem and of course, the Republic of Brooklyn right on the break, and the reaction from the crowds showed it was clearly worth it.”

Red Hook Summer is centered around a young boy who migrates from Atlanta, Georgia to Brooklyn, New York to spend the summer with his grandfather. His elder is a pastor whose goal is to convince his grandson to find God. Thereafter, the story takes the audience in several surprising directions, twists, and turns.

The movie will play again in the New York area next week, followed by an expansion in Atlanta, D.C., Chicago, Baltimore, Philadelphia, LA and several other cities.
