Deron Williams turned 28 today, an occasion the Brooklyn Nets used to show how much they care — and how much they want the free agent guard to stay with the team.
Williams no doubt was surprised to see a huge sign in front of his home that read: “HAPPY BIRTHDAY DERON! from your Brooklyn family” and features the Nets’ new logo.
The Nets are hoping to give Williams an even better present on July 1 when he becomes a free agent: a max contract extension.
Williams is expected to opt out of his contract and officially become an unrestricted free agent at midnight July 1.
Sources told ESPN.com that Williams is only interested in re-signing with the Nets or playing for his hometown Dallas Mavericks.
The Nets are confident that they can keep Williams despite the uncertainty surrounding their roster.
They currently have only four players under contract — Anthony Morrow, MarShon Brooks, Jordan Williams and Johan Petro. They have a second-round pick in Thursday’s NBA Draft, the 57th selection.
But they are expected to be very active in the off-season in trying to put the right pieces around Williams, assuming they can retain him.
The Nets have said they want to re-sign both restricted free-agent center Brook Lopez and forward Gerald Wallace. But the Nets are really hoping to pair Williams with his friend, Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard.
