Following his appearances at Coachella in April, Frank Ocean has been relatively mum on the status of his Island Def Jam debut — until now. On Friday, the Odd Future star released a new single and a video teaser for the new project, set to drop in July. Entitled “Channel Orange,” the album is set for release on July 17 and promises more of the R&B styling fans of the musician have come to expect with prior releases such as his 2011 mixtape, “Nostalgia, Ultra.”
The video preview offers listeners a glimpse of a trip-hop styled song in which Ocean croons melancholically about a flame named he calls Cleopatra. “She’s working at the pyramid tonight,” he sings mournfully over and over as a camera pans over a BMW station wagon in a dark alleyway. The music comes from “Pyramid,” Friday’s single, a nearly 10-minute slow jam Ocean posted for free download.
In addition to the album news, he announced a 14-date Channel Orange North American tour in July and August, with shows in New York, Los Angeles and Toronto, among other cities.
The in-demand musician. who appeared on Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “Watch the Throne,” marked his chart peak so far at No. 49 on the Billboard R&B Charts with past single “Thinking About You.”
