Marvel’s The Avengers has dominated the charts for three weeks straight, but not anymore. Men In Black 3 took the top spot on Friday with Will Smith’s return to the bigscreen. Men In Black 3 is not performing as well as its two harbingers, but looks to be on track to a $70-80 million Memorial Day weekend.
Men In Black 3 opened with a healthy $18 million on Friday, which is slightly less than the $18.6 million & $18.9 million earned on the opening nights of Men In Black II and Men in Black, respectively. The first two movies opened up in 1997 and 2002 prior to 3D. Men In Black 3’s initial attendance pales in comparison to the earlier films. Audience members gave Men In Black 3 a B+ CinemaScore and A- for the under 18 crowd.
The Avengers finally found some competition in the box office. The comic book movie phenomenon has now earned a staggering $486.4 million after just 22 days in theaters, and could eclipse half-a-billion today.
Battleship completely bombed under the competition of The Avengers and Men In Black 3 with a struggling $3 million on Friday. In a full week of being in the theaters, the naval combat game-turned movie only earned $36.5 million.
