The Washington National Cathedral plans to dedicate a statue of iconic Civil Rights leader Rosa Parks at a church ceremony on Thursday.
Park’s niece, Rhea McCauley, and the co-founder of the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development, Elaine Eason Steele, plan to attend the ceremony.
The statue of Parks will be joining statues of other prominent people, such as First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, Archbishop Oscar Romero, and former Dean and Bishop of Washington, John T. Walker—each of whom received their honored place on the cathedral’s Human Rights Porch because of their efforts to fight for equality and social justice for all people.
Sean Callahan, the Cathedral’s stonecarver, completed the carving of Rosa Parks and Mother Teresa in spring 2011.
