'The Avengers' Sets New Box Office Opening Record

Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow and Nick Fury assemble to smash the domestic revenue record with a $200.3 million opening!

This makes The Avengers the biggest opening ever, sky-rocketing past the previous record holder, Harry Potter’s, $169.2 million opening.

The Avengers added another $151.5 million from overseas ticket sales to bring its grand total to $441.5 million. That brings the film’s worldwide take to $641.8 million in just under two weeks.

That’s more than Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and Iron Man 2’s entire run.

The film started with $80.5 million for the full day, (second only to Harry Potter: Deathly Hollows Part 2 with $91.1 million recorded for its first day).

The success of The Avengers is the result of years of careful planning by Marvel Studios, which hinted to The Avengers collaboration in teasers after the credits of each anticipatory film.

The summer is just beginning and Hollywood has more potential record breakers in the line-up: The Amazing Spider-Man opens on July 3rd, followed by Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, which hits theaters July 20th.
