'Smash' Showrunner Theresa Rebeck Stepping Down

According to sources, Smash creator Theresa Rebeck is stepping away from her duties as showrunner. Moments after the Broadway musical show was confirmed for a second season, the executive producer backed away from her daily duties.

As of yet, there are no reports of the reason Rebeck chose to walk away from the position. However, the Broadway veteran will remain on board till the completion of the second season and could potentially write future episodes of the show.

Rebeck has been involved with the show from its inception, creating the script originally for Showtime, then later at NBC. In the TV show, the Broadway playwright Julia, played by Debra Messing, is actually based on Theresa Rebeck.

Even with Rebeck gone, Smash has a long line of executive produces with Broadway credentials such as Neil Meron, Marc Shaiman, Craig Zadan and Scott Wittman.

Despite being harshly criticized for the direction of certain story lines, NBC quickly renewed the TV show for strong overall performance.

Smash comes on Mondays at 10pm on NBC.
