In the midst of The Office going through some major changes, NBC is looking to replace show-runner Paul Lieberstein. The actor/writer is opting to focus more on the network’s The Farm, a Dwight Schrute spinoff that is in development.
The Farm would take funny man Rainn Wilson out of the office and onto the Shrute family farm. The TV show’s concept is going to get a test in the coming months of The Office. If the network approves the show, Lieberstein would serve as show-runner in addition to continuing his role on The Office, and Wilson will depart from the office for good.
Another possible reason for the changes are because The Office co-star Mindy Kaling got an offer at Fox to lead her own series. If her show goes to series, Kaling would also depart the NBC show to focus on her Fox deal.
In addition, head writer Daniel Chun signed a deal with ABC Studios in February. He’s also reportedly rethinking his commitment to The Office.
The other stars of The Office, namely Ed Helms, John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer will return for a ninth season.
