The hype, fanfare, and advance ticket sales for The Hunger Games may very well earn the movie box office numbers that are on par with The Twilight Saga film series and may also result in a significant boost to Lions Gate’s acclaim.
In anticipation of the huge turnout expected on opening day, Lionsgate will release Hunger Games in 4,137 North American theaters and counting, according to a report by Deadline. This will make the film, based on Suzanne Collins’s young adult series, one of the largest releases in the history of the studio.
With just under 10,000 prints playing throughout the U.S. and Canada starting Friday – and that number still growing – Hunger Games is #12 on the all-time list of widest openings at the box office. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, released in June 2010 in 4,468 theaters, remains at the #1 spot.
The Hunger Games opens at midnight this Friday.
