2012 Oscar Upset: Meryl Streep Beats Out Viola Davis

The 84th annual Academy Awards had some surprises and upsets last night, but you had to wait till the end.

Meryl Streep winning an Oscar for Best Actress should come as no surprise to anyone for she is one of the greatest to ever do it. But when Streep’s name was called instead of Viola Davis, a collective gasp could be heard among audience members.

Davis was largely expected to bring home the statue because, Davis beat out Streep at the Critics Choice and SAG Awards this year.

When Streep got to the mic, she joked,” Oh, come on. Why her again? But, whatever”

The Actress sparked laughs and tears during her speech, thanking her husband Don Gummer. She went on to say,

“I really want to thank all my colleagues, all my friends. I look out here and I see my life before my eyes,” Streep said. “My old friends, my new friends. Really, this is such a great honor, but the thing that counts the most with me is the friendships and the love and the sheer joy we have shared making movies together. My friends, thank you all of you — departed and here — for this inexplicably wonderful career.”

Streep first Oscar came in 1980 for her Best Supporting role in Kramer Vs. Krame. Three years later she won Best Actress in Sophie’s Choice. Streep went a staggering 12 nomination before winning last night for her performance as The Iron Lady.
