UPDATE-Whitney Houston dead at 48 years old according to the Associated Press. More details on her death below.
Whitney reigned at the top of the pop charts and broke musical barriers during the 1980s and 1990s. Today’s growing pop stars like Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Beyonce are still chasing after Houston at the height of her career.
Despite her immeasurable success, Whitney had a hard fall from fame. Following her marriage to R&B singer Bobby Brown, Whitney’s life became plagued by drug use and erratic behavior. After years of abusing drugs like cocaine and pills Houston would eventually lose her once pitch perfect voice. One beautiful thing came of her tumultuous marriage, the birth of her daughter Bobbi Kristina. Whitney would eventually take a swing at a comeback with minimal success.
“The biggest devil is me. I’m either my best friend or my worst enemy,” said Houston to ABC’s Diane Sawyer during her infamous 2002 interview.
Whitney’s shocking death comes weeks after she reportedly went into bankruptcy and two days after she was spotted leaving Tru Hollywoood nightclub looking out of sorts. Earlier today Houston’s publicist, Kristen Foster, said the singer had died.
