UPDATE-‘Soul Train’ creator Don Cornelius died earlier this morning of a possible suicide. According to LA Times, Cornelius’ body was found this morning at 4 a.m in his Sherman Oaks, CA home after a gun shot wound to the head.
In 1971 Don helped provide a platform for African American musicians from genres including R&B, Hip Hop, Jazz, Gospel and Soul. In it’s 35 year history – running from 1971 thru 2006 – Soul Train holds the honor of the “longest, continuously running first-run syndicated program in television history.”
In his last years Cornelius suffered “significant health issues” including a stroke and a condition that required brain surgery.
Cornelius’ lawyer and friend just released a statement to TMZ, “This is devastating news. Don was a kind, funny and brilliant man. Even though his many health battles had left him frail, he remained vibrant, courtly and always sharp as a tack.”
Don Cornelius will be missed.
