The Flowers of War starring Christian Bale is a Chinese film which has been nominated in the category of Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards. Director Zhang Yimou has borrowed the plot of a novel titled The 13 Women of Nanjing by Geling Yan for this war movie that revolves around the Nanking Massacre that took place during the Second Sino Japanese War. This foreign film is set in the year 1937 and the events of the movie unfold in Nanjing which is the capital of Jiangsu province in China.
The movie follows the events that unfold when a group of people escaping persecution take refuge in a Church compound and how they are helped in their struggle to survive by an American priest named John Magee – the character essayed by Christian Bale.
