Miss Angola Leila Lopes Takes Miss Universe 2011 Crown

The 2011 Miss Universe contest crowned Miss Angola, Leila Lopes as it’s winner; Lopes is the first winner from Angola in the history of the ceremony. Leila Luliana da Costa Vieira Lopes is a 25-year old student studying Business Management in Great Britain. Lopes was also crowned Miss Angola UK last year October.

The Miss Universe pageant took place at the Credicard Hall, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The Donald Trump owned event was hosted by NBC “Today” anchor Natalie Morales and the Bravo network’s Andy Cohen and included celebrity judges like Connie Chung. Chung weighed in on the gravity of the event,

You have to keep in mind that these women are not objects just to be looked at. They’re to be taken seriously. I want to choose somebody I take seriously and the world takes seriously, too.”

The 16 finalist included young women from the following countries; France,   Kosovo, Colombia, China,   Angola, Australia, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Netherlands, USA, Ukraine, Panama, Costa Rica, Portugal, Philippines and Venezuela;

Reportedly Colombia, Venezuela and USA were early favorites. Neither made it through the top 10 which included; Australia, Costa Rica, France, Ukraine, Portugal, Panama, Philippines, Angola, China and Brazil.

The top 5 Miss Universe contestants were China’s, Luo Zilin, Philippines, Shamcey Supsup, Brazil, Priscila Machado, 1st runner up Ukraine, Olesia Stefanko and winner Angola, Leila Lopes.

According to IBN, Miss Angola said in reply to what physical trait she would change about herself,

“I consider myself a woman endowed with inner beauty. I have acquired many wonderful principles from my family and I intend to follow these for the rest of my life.”
