*After Being Bullied for Her Skin Color, This Mother Taught Her Daughter to Love Being Black, Smart and Vibrant
After blogger Alexandra Elle’s 8-year-old was teased by other students on the bus, Elle decided to reinforce a new sense of pride in her daughter.
Charleigh told her mother last week that kids were bullying her on the bus because she had darker skin. In an exclusive with Buzzfeed News, the 28-year-old revealed that she initially told her daughter that “she is a beautiful person, inside and out, and so is the color of her skin.”
Subsequently, she decided to do a self-love session with Charleigh. Professionally, Elle works with adults and guides them through self-care sessions. Since last week, Charleigh has learned to love her skin tone and herself even more despite the bullying.
In a video from Saturday, Nov. 5, Elle shows the world how she helped her daughter cope with mocking. She instructs Charleigh to write positive attributes about herself on sticky notes and post them onto a mirror. From there on, the young girl begins to read them aloud.
“I am beautiful and Black … smart … funny … vibrant,” she says in the clip. “I’m kind … honest … helpful … graceful … nice … proud to be brown. I am magical, unbreakable, and confident.”
The video, uploaded to Twitter, has been retweeted nearly 120,000 times and has inspired others to do the same.
