The Principal of the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus, Professor Eudine Barriteau has called on the Freundel Stuart administration to introduce the necessary legislation to allow the institution to conduct research into marijuana.
Professor Barriteau was responding to recent comments from Government Senator Jepter Ince, who suggested that the UWI needed to capitalize on the financial gains to be derived from research on marijuana usage for medical purposes. He was speaking last week during debate on the Caribbean Accreditation Authority Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (Incorporation) Bill 2016.
However in her address to the launch of the UWI’s Global Giving Week, Professor Barriteau stated that the Cave Hill Campus “has been investigating the medicinal value of Barbadian plants”.
“I must and need to inform the public before our colleagues at Cave Hill can conduct research on marijuana, the Government of Barbados would need to create the enabling environment by producing the legislative framework to do so.
“The government of Jamaica did this is in April 2015 so my colleagues and my fellow principal at the Mona Campus can legitimately and legally conduct that research,” Professor Barriteau noted.
She also announced that the Cave Hill Campus has plans to host a marijuana symposium in September this year.
