Soledad O’Brien Interviews Ex-Haitian Dictator ‘Baby Doc’

Former CNN host Soledad O’Brien’s first segment for Al Jazeera America featured an interview with former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier, also known as “Baby Doc.”

On the channel’s America Tonight on Wednesday, O’Brien also spoke with a former political prisoner of Duvalier’s and detailed the dictator’s return to Haiti, where he’s currently facing corruption charges, after his 25-year exile in France in 2011.

Twice during her eight-minute report O’Brien referred to Duvalier as “a shadow of his former self,” noting his frail appearance and physical limitations. Duvalier, she said in a follow-up interview about her report, refused to answer some questions and wanted to wait for the court’s ruling on his corruption case, expected this fall, before opening up about certain issues about his past and his future plans in Haiti.
