Honey Boo Boo’s Mother Offers Parenting Advice…Really

Not long ago, someone dubbed June Shannon “Worst Mother in America.” There may be a lot we don’t agree with or understand about how the Here Comes Honey Boo Boo stars live, but that seems quite harsh to me.

You may not be a fan of their down-home, redneck ways, but you can’t deny one thing – the mom to Honey Boo Boo, Pumpkin, Chickadee, and Chubbs has raised four happy, confident girls. That is no easy feat in this day and age.

During a recent Q&A with Facebook fans, she dished about their sometimes controversial lifestyle. You may be surprised to find that Mama June revealed some incredibly smart and savvy parenting advice.

What advice would you give another mother of two kids?

Mama June: Be there for your kids, love them unconditionally. Be a parent first and foremost, but bein’ your kid’s best friend is important, too. Havin’ an open door policy lets you stay in the know.

Has all the fame gone to the other girls’ heads?

Mama June: No. Pumpkin is the funniest with it. One time we were at a BBQ house and someone said, “Omg, you’re Pumpkin from Honey Boo Boo!” And she looked at the woman and said, “Who’s Pumpkin? I don’t watch Honey Boo Boo.”

My question for you is how did you handle motherhood at such a young age, and does it really get easier after two?

Mama June: Being a young mother, don’t get me wrong, it was hard. I had a full-time job and two kids before 17, but it’s a learning game. Even at their ages now, I still learn somethin’ new every day.

What is your hidden talent?

Mama June: My talent is raisin’ my kids. That’s it.

Where did you get your recipe for sketti?

Mama June: It’s been an old tradition. I grew up on that. You gotta make sure to toss it on the counters to make sure it’s done. I didn’t like the taste of tomato paste so I used ketchup instead. A lot of people who tried it said it tasted like skettios. There’s no real ratio for the butter and ketchup. Just whatever you like.

What is your favorite part of doing the show?

Mama June: My favorite part of being on the show is to be able to show someone the inside of our life. We might not be the most traditional family, but we like showin’ other types of families.

How has the show changed your life?

Mama June: The show really hasn’t changed my life at all. Really the only change is that now we have security. I really didn’t think our show would be as popular as it is. At any given day, we have a big crowd outside our house.

Do you see pageant life in the future for your grand baby?

Mama June: Yes I do. She has a glitz pageant comin’ up soon.

Did any of your other kids do pageants? And how did Alana get started?

Mama June: Alana was the first. We thought Alana looked like a porcelain doll with her chubby cheeks and her curly hair, so we decided to put her in a mall pageant…
