Robert Rodriguez Announces Possible Fourth 'Mariachi' Film

A recent report from MTV showcases director Robert Rodriguez announcing that both he and longtime collaborator Antonio Banderas may be bringing the famed Mariachi character back to the big screen.

The 2013 Sundance Film Festival marks the 20th anniversary of El Mariachi‘s worldwide debut. To celebrate, Robert Rodriguez screened El Mariachi, the indie film that launched the director into stardom and earned him two sequels —  1995’s Desperado and 2003’s Once Upon a Time In Mexico. Apparently, another sequel may also be in the works.

Continuation was discussed while Antonio Banderas was in town filming his cameo for Machete Kills, Rodriguez’s Grindhouse spin-off sequel that celebrates over-the-top filmmaking and action. Presumably, the visit went so well and the duo had so much fun that talk once again settled on the possibility of reincarnating the character that granted them both established careers.

“We forgot about how much fun we’ve had together,” Rodriguez said. “We decided we have to do something. We want to do another El Mariachi movie at some point. We always said we would, but much later when he’s older and rounder. We have to figure something else out, because he’s in better shape now than he ever was.”

While Robert Rodriguez’s announcement is certainly tongue-in-cheek and fun, there’s no reason not to believe his conversation with Antonio Banderas actually took place. It’s also nice to picture Banderas back in his scorpion-printed jacket instead of voicing Puss in Boots or in front of a green screen for Spy Kids.

In the mean time, we’ll be able to see what Robert Rodriguez and Antonio Banderas come up with for Machete Kills, which is due out this September. Let us know what you think about a possible return of the Mariachi character.
