Rapper Meek Mill took to social media to drag his record label for not treating him well. The Philadelphia native claims that the company “blackballed” him despite the success of his last album. Moreover, he charges that the label tried to divide him and some of his celebrity friends.
The emcee chose violence on the first day of Black History Month by declaring war on Atlantic Records, a label that has supported African-American artists since its inception in the late 1940s with artists like Joe Morris, Tiny Grimes and Ruth Brown.
He took to Twitter and wrote a cryptic message that implied that some of the suits won’t let him release new music. He tweeted, “So look I made Atlantic records 100’s of millions and let them rape me out out Roddy a artist they came to me about in jail.”
He continued his rant by informing his fans why they don’t have new music, “They still saying I can’t drop music until 9 months after my last album got blackballed just wrapped buildings and Nina art with talent.”
Mill’s last album was “Expensive Pain,” a successful project that charted in the #3 spot on the Billboard 200 chart in October of 2021. According to Complex, the album release was predated by a pricey marketing campaign that took the Nina Chanel Abney cover art and wrapped various landmarks in major cities across the country.
The “Dreams and Nightmares” chart-topper further explained that the label has worked to ruin his relationships with the Compton rapper Roddy Ricch, whom he collaborated with on the Nipsey Hussle tribute song “Letter to Nipsey” in January 2020, and Miami’s Rick Ross.
“Roddy my youngin still …. But that label seperated us instantly when the millions came in from him… same thing they tried to do with me and rozay … it takes a long time to catch up too because most of em tied in for the love of some money …artist scared to speak up.”
In 2011, the rapper, whose real name is Robert Rihmeek Williams, signed to Ross’ Maybach Music Group. “Expensive Pain” was his most recent project with the music executive.
“They didn’t put nothing into expensive pain and then said I can’t drop another project for 9 months at the end of my contract after I made them 100’s of millions ….. how would can anybody survive that … most rappers can’t speak because they depend on these companies ‘I don’t’”
Atlantic Records have not released a response to the artist’s comments.
