A little after Nipsey Hussle was shot and killed in March, a woman who drove the accused gunman Eric Holder tried to turn herself in but was turned away by a front desk officer. And now police want to know why.
According to Billboard, an internal affairs investigation has been launched by the LAPD to determine why the woman — whose name has yet to be released — was not taken in.
The news of the probe came after grand jury testimony revealed the woman went to a police station after she saw her car and plate number on TV during a manhunt.
Transcripts show that her mother first called police but was told she couldn’t speak to an officer until one was available at 6 a.m. the following day.
Then after the mother and her daughter went to the station, the driver was told to ignore the news reports altogether.
“Don’t worry about it” and “Don’t listen to the news,” are some of the things the officer told her.
At first, police thought the driver was turned away because of a simple error, but now they want to make sure the mistake isn’t connected to something more serious.
“While the initial indications pointed to a miscommunication, we have initiated an administrative investigation to ensure all policies and procedures were followed,” wrote LAPD spokesperson Josh Rubenstein.
“We will review all statements that have already been given, interview all of the individuals involved, and look for any potential body cam video that may have captured the interchange,” he added.
But Rubenstein also said he doesn’t believe the front desk officer had nefarious intent and that the cop just might’ve been confused about what the woman was trying to communicate.
He also said it’s possible the officer thought the woman was simply telling him that someone was wrongfully recording her vehicle.
“She was not making herself clear of what she was doing,” stated Rubenstein.
After Hussle was killed on March 31 in South Los Angeles, Holder was arrested two days later about 20 miles away from the crime scene. The driver said she had no idea he was going to shoot Hussle and merely waited in the car while he was gone.
Holder has pleaded not guilty to the shooting and is currently behind bars on $7 million bond. He was charged with one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, for shooting two other people, and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon.
